DNA Baser Network Edition
Troubleshooting

components

The program cannot be registered (key is not accepted)

The registration process is simple and it should take less than 10 minutes. If you have problems, doesn't mean that all you have done is wrong. Probably you just skipped one step from our documentation. Usually, when our customers have problems registering the program is because (in this order):

  • They submitted the ID of one of the client computers instead of server's ID.
  • They installed the Standard (single user) edition instead of Network edition.
  • They didn't used the script provided to enter the key they received.

Before starting to do complex debugging steps, please follow the above steps. There is a 99% that one of them will fix your problem. If this doesn't fix the problem please use the troubleshooting diagram below and answer with YES to the questions below (the order is relevant):

  1. Did you download the proper edition (Network edition) of DNA Baser from our web site?
  2. Did you use the "RegisterServer" command to get the ID of your server?
  3. The Computer ID you sent to us is the ID of your server and not the ID of your client computer(s)?
  4. Did you use the "RegisterServer" command to enter the key?
  5. Did you enter the key correctly? Please check the "My key is not working" paragraph.

The key was accepted but the clients cannot connect o the server

If you fail to setup your network license you may want to contact your network administrator to help you with the setup process. Show this page to the network administrator. They have high IT skills and these instructions are not complicated to them.

  1. Did you start the server using the "StartAsServer" command?
  2. The client computer(s) and the server are in the same LAN network (they use the same IP range like 192.168.0.xxx)?
  3. Your firewall is blocking UPD broadcasts?
  4. Did you download the latest version of DNA Baser from our web site?
  5. Are you using the same version (the Network version) for both server and client(s)?
  6. Did you check your firewall/antivirus settings?

Setting the Windows XP firewall

Windows XP Service Pack 2 introduced the Windows Firewall which sometimes needs to be "tamed" to make it compatible with some programs. When you start the server for the first time, you may see this dialog:

Firewall settings

Just click "Unblock" and everything should be ok. If DNA Baser clients cannot connect to DNA Baser server, you may need to manually set your firewall.

Note: DNA Baser Network edition requires the TCP/IP protocol in order to function. This protocol should be installed by default in your Windows OS.

Setting the Windows XP firewall (advanced)

Here is the way to open the proper UDP port and make the Network edition work:

  • First, run the software in server mode, and note the UDP port number that it is listed on the server message window. It will be on the line saying something like "Locator started on UDP port XXXXX", where XXXXX is the number.
  • Go to your Control Panel and click on the Security Center icon.
  • Click on Windows Firewall.
  • Select the "exceptions" tab on the dialog that will appear.
  • Click on the button labeled "Add Port". It will ask for a program name and a port number.
  • Enter the full path and filename for the program file, and the port number you found in the first step, into the edit boxes on that dialog. Also, press the UDP radio button, to change it from TCP to UDP. Then click the OK button.

That should let the clients locate the server and work as designed.
