DNA Baser Network Edition
Setup and registration

components

Note

We will assume that the installation folder was "C:\DNA Baser\". If you choose a different folder please change all commands accordingly.

Even if the setup process does not require advanced IT skills, you may want to contact your network administrator to assist you with it.

  • 1. Choose your server
  • 2. Download
  • 3. Installing the server
  • 4. Registration
  • 5. Starting the server
  • 6. Installing the client(s)
  • 7. Starting the client(s)

Choose a machine to use it as "server"

Hardware requirements

DNA Baser Network edition doesn't really need a real server. As "server" you can use any computer, even a very old one that can barely run Windows NT 5 (64MB or RAM) or Windows 2000 (128MB of RAM). If you have an unused old laptop that is laying around you can also use it as "server". A laptop computer requires 3-8 times less energy than a desktop computer.

DNA Baser Server requires only few MB of RAM and it takes less than 0.5% of your CPU, so you can also use one of your productivity machines. You will  be able to use your machine normally while DNA Baser Server is running in background.

Software requirements

DNA Baser is a monolithic/system independent application. It DOES NOT install stuff (DLL, Java, dot NET, services, etc) in your Windows OS. The only file it may install in your system is a small font file (it installs the font only if it runs with administrator privileges).

Network speed

The network speed can be a bottleneck but only for few seconds when the client tries to connect to the server. A client may need few good seconds to connect to the server and ask for a valid license it your network is slow or overloaded

Download the Network edition

In order to operate the software you need to download the Network edition of DNA Baser. The key WILL NOT WORK if you don't use this edition!

If you already have DNA Baser Standard (single user) edition installed, delete it and replace it with the Network edition.

DNA Baser Network can act both as client and server so you need download it both on your server AND client computer(s).

Install DNA Baser Network edition on server

The installation process of DNA Baser Server is similar with the installation process of the standard (single user) edition described here (see steps 1-4).

a) Double click the setup package that you just downloaded in step 2

b) Choose a destination folder. Something as "c:\DNA Baser\" or "c:\Program Files\DNA Baser\" will be appropriate.

c) When the program starts, shut it down immediately! It is important NOT to operate it as by default it starts in "Client" mode. We need it to operate the program in "Server" mode. For this see the information in the "Starting the server" tab.

Unlocking the program

In order to use the program you need to enter your unlock key. If you don't have your key yet please follow these steps:

  1. Retrieve your server ID and send it to us

To get your server ID, locate a file called "RegisterServer.cmd" in your DNA Baser folder and double click it to run it. DNA Baser will display an 8-digit string. This is your computer ID. You need to fill this ID in the "Key Request" form received after purchase and sent it to us using this form.
Note: You need to send only one ID: the ID of your server.

  2. Receive the unlock key

Soon we will send you your unlock key. One your server, use the "RegisterServer.cmd" command again to start DNA Baser to enter the key!

IMPORTANT!

The above procedure works ONLY if you have the proper edition (the Network edition) of DNA Baser installed. The RegisterServer.cmd and StartAsServer.cmd script files are located in DNA Baser installation folder (probably "c:\DNA Baser\" or "C:\Program Files\DNA Baser\"). If you cannot find them it means you have downloaded the wrong package (you need to download the "Network" package).

Starting the program in Server mode

To start DNA Baser Assembler as server, the user must double click the "StartAsServer.cmd" file. This will display for 300 seconds a window that will inform you that the program is working in server mode. You can change this behavior. Details about what this command does behind the scene are here.

Hint:

  • To create a handy shortcut on your desktop press the Control and Shift keys (simultaneously) while dragging the file on your desktop.
  • To make DNA Baser to automatically start as server every time your server starts, you can place a shortcut to this file in your StartUp folder (located under the Windows 'Start' button).

Installing the software on the client machine(s)

The installation process of DNA Baser Client is similar to the installation process of the standard (single user) edition described here (see steps 1-4).

a) Double click the setup package that you just downloaded in step 2

b) Choose a destination folder. Something as "c:\DNA Baser\" or "c:\Program Files\DNA Baser\" will be appropriate.

c) When the setup process is ready, the program will start automatically in "Client" mode. If the program does not start automatically, go to 'Starting the client(s)' tab.

If you have followed the previous steps, the server should be also running (and hopefully registered). Therefore, the client will connect to the server and download the license. You can start using the software now.

Starting the client(s)

Double click the "DNA Baser v2.exe" file to start DNA Baser in client mode. The "StartAsClient.cmd" file is doing the same thing.

Note: You don't need a key for each client computer. The only key you need is the one for the server (see Installing the server). The client(s) will automatically search for the server (in your LAN), connect to it and retrieve the key from it.
