Basics

DNA Baser can act both as client and server. In the 'Starting the server' and 'Starting the client' section you will learn how to make DNA Baser act as server or client. When it runs in server mode, we will refer to it as DNA Baser Server. When it runs in client more we will refer to it as DNA Baser Client. The computer on which the DNA Baser is running in client mode are called client computers. The users that are using the client computers are called clients.

Clients and servers

DNA Baser Network has two components: the server and the client(s). Regular DNA Baser users (called clients) will not even know that the server is there. Only the administrator will access the server once, during initial setup.

How it works

Most of the time, the server is laying dormant. When a user turns on a computer and starts DNA Baser client in order to do some work, the client does not have a key so it is not functional. However, it connects to the server (using the LAN) and tries to retrieve one. If the server has a free (unused) key it sends the key to the client and decreases the number of available keys with one. If other users are online and the server has no free key left, the last user will not be able to acquire a key and DNA Baser will not work. A user that already uses the software needs to close the software in order to release a key.
