Known installation issues

Unicode (Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc) problems

If you are running under a limited user account and you are using UNICODE characters, please see "Problems on systems using UNICODE characters under non-administrator accounts"

Windows 64 bits

DNA Baser Sequence Assembler supports all modern Windows operation systems on 32 bit. It will not work on Windows 64 bits.

If you have a 64 bit Windows, please install DNA Baser in a different computer or in a 32 bit virtual PC.

Installation troubleshooting

If you cannot install the program, Please try the suggestions below in the specified order:

Redownload the program

Rarely may it happen that the setup file gets corrupted during download. If this is the case, you will get a message that will suggest that. Re-download the program. If you are using Internet Explorer it may be necessary to reset your browser cache.

Don't install it in "Program Files"

Don't install DNA Baser Sequence Assembler in “Program Files” or other system controlled areas – especially if you don’t have administrator rights. The recommended location is “c:\DNA Baser”.

Is your antivirus the culprit?

It is known that some security program may be overzealous and interfere with legit programs especially during installation. Try to temporary disable your antivirus/firewall software and see if the installation is successful. Some antivirus programs do not have this feature so you cannot disable them. In this case, the best you can do is to answer "allow" to all questions and pop-up the antivirus may display while DNA Baser is installing.

Run it as admin

Try to run the setup in privileged mode (as administrator). If you don’t know how to do that try a google search like this.

If Windows (especially Vista and Windows 7) says "This program might not have installed correctly. If this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling..." do NOT try to reinstall it. Just go in the folder where you installed DNA Baser Sequence Assembler and manually start it (double click the “Dna Baser v2.exe” file).

Disable the skins

DNA Baser Sequence Assembler has its own set of skins. Because of this, in some systems, especially if you have custom visual themes or software that alters your themes (like Windows Blinks) it may not work. In this case, try to disable the "skins" feature in DNA Baser Sequence Assembler. To do this, navigate to the folder where the program has been installed. You will see there a folder named "System". Enter this folder and delete all “skn” files (for example delete “Skin.skn”). Then start the program again.

Default path for the skin file is: c:\DNA Baser\System\Skin.skn

Try in a different computer

Do you have access to a different computer? You have a personal laptop? Can your colleague allow you to use his/her computer? Remember that 64 bit flavors of Windows are not supported. You can also install DNA Baser in a 32 bit virtual PC.

Is this an installation problem?

Please make sure that the problem you are having is indeed an installation issue. Else, you are reading (this) the wrong support manual. If the program cannot be installed and you never see it running, then yes, it may be an installation problem. If the program installed and you have seen it run it (even for a single second) but it crashes, then it may not be an installation issue. In this later case, search support in a different area on our web site.
